Espoo Folk Music Society » Happenings

PILPATUS is organised each spring since 1985 and it is the most important event of the Society. Folk musicians take part in this event by performing in malls, hospitals and old people's homes in Espoo. Also different folk dance groups take part in these performing opportunities.

JuuriJuhla - RotFest is a newcomer in a long row of folk music events in Finland. The festival roots back to an EU-project in the Central Uusimaa which brought Espoo its folk music week in the spring of 2003. Different country type houses serve as stages for the event. Their unique environments bring the festival its own look. The main concert is arrenged in Sellosali in Leppävaara with well-known and talented finnish performers the roots of which lay deep inside traditional finnish folk tradition. The artistic director of the JuuriJuhla is Maria Kalaniemi, Artist Professor since September 1, 2005. The next JuuriJuhla is to be arranged 17. - 22.4.2006.

HELLSTRÖMIN SYYSSOITTO (The Autumn Concert in Honour of Hellstroem) is arranged by the folk music group Leikarit (of Espoo). Apart from last few years, its stage was an old Youth Society Club House called Stenhalla in Nupuri which is a part of Espoo. Its name origins to one famous espoo folk musician Martin Hellström (1898-1988). Martin learned his skill of violin playing as a tradition from his father who used to make carriages and their parts and also 9 violins in his workshop. The concert has got a little bit of of new look as it has been arranged in Kanneltalo (Kannelmäki, Helsinki), a part of a new event, Jollyfolk, a folk tradition cruise between Helsinki and Tallinn and as an anniversary concert of Leikarit in Sellosali together with Esbo spelmanslag - Espoon pelimannit.
